Sprinters League : Round 6 (Result)

<Overall Results  and Table after Round 6>

Report Round 6
Round 6 of the league highlighted the benefit of a regular sprint league as riders got to try out different combinations ahead of the upcoming National Championships and the trip to Glasgow in September. Hats off to junior rider David O’ Sullivan who stepped up to the plate and rode as Man 3 behind the Ulster Express duo of Mairs and Barnes. In their first outing their times were very encouraging and bode well for the future. It was good to see Colm O Cuinneagain back in action as he joined up with club mate Rob Murphy and reigning M50 Sprint and TT Champion Eddie Lynch to record a super time on a windy night. And we had a record! The Master’s record which requires a combined age of 135 years was broken by the 3 C’s, Collins, Curtis and Caffrey with a time of 50.71 secs which shaved just 0.11 of off the record set by Collins, Brendan Whelan and Terry Cromer 9 years ago. In the 1 lap TS we saw the irrepressible Susie Mitchell and young gun Eimear McMullen record two times which mark them down as favourites for the upcoming National Championships. Aisling Conlan, Anne Coleman and Deirbhle Ivory continued to improve and will all challenge for the podium at Nationals. And finally, what can one say about about National Over 60’s Sprint Champion Paul O’ Connell! As one rider in his 40’s said “When I grow up I want to be like Paul!”. The man keeps producing the goods week in, week out. All this on a windy night with the heavens opening just as we finished! In the overall standings, Tony Mairs holds a slender lead over John Caffrey. And we now have 45 riders on the results list. Big thanks to Hugh Byrne, William Cannon, Ger Ivory and Mark Kiely for running the gates, watches and coaching. Your efforts were appreciated by all of the riders.

Report Round 5
We had reduced numbers as many of our regulars were racing abroad but we still managed to have a varied and competitive event. We started with a flying 200 and two match sprints for all, then a standing half lap out of the gate followed by another start (just for practice!) and a mixed ability 3 up Team Sprint. This event was quite popular and one we may include again! Finished with two Rolling Kilo Group Sprints and all went home suitably tired and sunburnt!

Report Round 4
26 riders took to the line last week for what was a Keirin Fest. With three of the four provinces represented and riders ranging in age from 14 to 70 (something) we had an exciting days racing. Two rider’s lead clean sweep’s of their respective categories with Maria McAllister winning all three of her races. Not to be outdone young Eamonn Hartley from Waterford won all three of his races with Paul O’ Connell and Paul Atkinson both pushing him hard. All those years racing on Goff’s track in Waterford showed as Eamonn used a variety of tactics. In the Men’s Elite Tony Mairs won two heats with Harvey Barnes winning the final heat. Tony continues to lead overall. David O Sullivan was so dominant in the B group that he was promoted to the A group for the final. He looks a real prospect given how he took the race to Tony and Co. in heat 3. In the women’s category Autumn Collins was denied a clean sweep when Lyndsey Bryce gambled and went early to romp home in their final heat with Autumn coming home ahead of the evergreen Susie Mitchell for second place. Odhran Doogan showed a good turn of speed when beating some established track sprinters to win heat 1 of his group. It was good to see Colm Sevastopulo back in action and winning. Ashling Conlan showed significant improvement as she closed the gap to the top riders in her category. Could she yet be an Olympian in both the Kayak and on the track? It was great to see the youngest riders try a variety of tactics in their races, and even more encouraging was how easily they adapted to the Derny. Some real prospects in here. Final event was the Handicap and Eimear McMullen lead a ladies 1,2,3 as she lead home Susie Mitchell and Olivia Cannon. (All those long spins with her grandmother Lily paying off for Olivia. Maybe we could get Lily to race next!) And the Sun Shone all day! This is starting to read like a work of fiction. Exciting racing, the sun shone, riders enjoying themselves. Who knew track racing could be so exciting. Thanks to Mark Kiely for driving the Derny and to William, Hugh & Arthur’s Dad for helping out. Results are attached. Finally best of luck to all those sprinters competing in France and Germany in the coming weeks.

Report Round 3
Great turn out for Round 3 which had a Team Sprint focus. An exciting afternoon’s racing. We had our first visitor for this season with Jamie Alexander visiting from Glasgow. He paired up with Tony Mairs in the TS. The duo recording the fastest times for the night as they edged out Eamonn Byrne and Harvey Barnes. Also in the TS, the ladies duo of Autumn Collins and Eimear McMullen recorded the 4th fastest women’s TS ever recorded at Sundrive with a time that would have been good enough for silver at last year’s nationals, in what was the duo’s first outing together. In the Keirin, Harvey Barnes claimed a major scalp when he pipped National Champion Tony Mairs with Jamie Alexander in 3rd spot. When the points were tallied up at the end of the days racing it saw Tony Mairs back at the top of the leader board with Eimear McMullen now up to 2nd overall. Big thanks to Hugh Byrne, Mark Kiely, William Cannon and Eddie Dunne for helping out tonight. Thanks to the riders who put on a great show. Round 4 will be on June 9th. More details in due course.

Report Round 2
Fantastic turnout today. Aside from the usual suspects we had a significant influx of Youth cyclists. Several National champions ranging from the M60 champion Paul O Connell to the Elite Champion Tony Mairs. We also had Arthur Teggart resplendent in his team GB kit. We had riders from Kerry and Donegal for the first time. Some excellent performances, very close racing and a lot of tired bodies.

Report Round 1
We had a record turn out with 25 riders. Current National Elite Sprint Champion set the fastest time on the night, with newcomer Harvey Barnes a close second. David Swift showed an excellent turn of speed to break 13 seconds in 3rd spot. Multi National Master’s medalist John Caffrey came in 4th ahead of former two time Elite Sprint Champion Michael Mulcahy who’s back after a year off. Elite Women’s silver medalist, Autumn Collins rounded out the top 6. After three rounds of match sprinting and the one lap handicap John Caffrey is top of the leader board after round 1 with 33 points, with Harvey Barnes just one point behind in 2nd
