Report : Duane Delaney Memorial

30 Sep 2008

Last weekend we at the Track Commission we delighted to host the Duane Delaney Memorial on behalf of Ravens Cycling Club, which is now in it's second year as a multiple event Track Grand Prix . The day started with flying 200 TTs and National Sprint Champion Michael Mulcahy posted the fastest time recorded at Sundrive this year and went on dominate all his 3 x 3up sprints with all the class of a true champion. Everyone got three sprints within their own ability and there were impressive performances from riders at all levels including some great efforts from our U16s Ross Campbell and Tom Maxwel (both Lucan) and Adam Lawler (Swords). Also of note was Niall Fitzgerald (DWCC) won all his sprints the hard way by attacking a lap out, placed 2nd in the B scratch and still finshed just outside the prizes!!

After the sprints came on of the featured attractions of the meet with an attempt at the recently defined Track Sprint Outdoor record held by our local team. The host club, Ravens opened proceedings with Andrew Duffin leading it out, followed by John Moran with Anto Moran taking it to the line. Not quite fast enough, but then the Limerick lads took centre stage. They stunned the opposition by knocking a second of the previous weekend 's record and dipped the new record under 50 seconds for the first time! Our local team got within a few hundreds of a second of their previous best but acknowledged the Limerick Cycling Pursuits team of John Duggan, Ivan Casey and Michael Mulcahy as the new 'minders' of their record!

Next up was the scratch race, again diviided by ability. The B race was close run affair with no rider able to stamp their authorithy on it but Gerri Garmvolgyi broke on the last lap and held off Niall Fitzgerald (DWCC) and Adam Lawler (Swords) winniing the sprint for 3rd . Noel Tonge (IVCA) won the B section by placing well in all disciplines thus completing his transition to track He actually tied with hungarian rider Gerri on points, and it took their flying 200 time to split them . The A scratch was race was savage with constant attacking with eventually Michael Mulcahy (Cycling Pursuits) and Keith Meghan (Sundrive Track Team) breaking clear and working well to hold the field at 150m. It looked to be between these two until John Duggan also from Cycling Pursuits bridged across. Good team work then allowed Michael to get clear on his own and he held off all opposition to finish with maximum points in all events.

A great days racing was had by all and we finished with three riders attempting to break the recently established Outdoor 500m Record. Michael Mulcahy took the record to 36.94 from the time set the previous week by David Neill (Team Madigan), This had to be the most dominant display of riding I have ever witnessed at Sundrive with Michael posting a season best in the 200, winning all his sprints, outdoor Team sprint record, dominating the scratch race and then..........taking the 500 outdoor record as well! With young riders like David (U16) and Michael (age 20) the future looks good for Irish Track Racing and all team mates and opposition will benifit from riding with and against them
