Orla Hendron : World Masters Points Champion! PDF Print

World Champion Has a nice ring to it!! After a week when Orla competeted in everything that The World Masters Track Championships had to offer she was still able to shine on the final event of what all our Irish riders found exhausting. She had competed in the 500m, Pursuit, Scratch and Sprint competition, and still had enough in the tank to take the World title in the event which probably best suits her attacking style.

In the back of her mind this surely was the event she would have favoured and yet and coming on the last day she could have been forgiven for holding back on her efforts during the week but bronze medal ride off in the pursuit, bronze in the scratch and winning the 5-8 ride off in the sprint yesterday tells the real story!

while Aideen Collard added to her tally with a bronze in the sprint yesterday taking that 2-0, and she followed up with another bronze today in her points race. This brings her personal total to four medals and the Irish haul to 7 medals in total.

Ireland's remaining competitor Terry Cromer finished 7th in the sprint yesterday and made a timely exit in his points race today as his retirement came just before a big crash which saw two of the competitors stretchered off including multiple world champion and coaching guru Dave LeGrys stetchered off.

The team did well to have Terry's experience on board and all paid tribute to the excellent work by Ger McNamara who not only drove the Cycling Ireland van with all their bikes and kit to Portugal but operated as mechanic,  and did everything needed to ease the pressure on the riders. When athletes succeed it is through their own physical effort without doubt but credit also goes to all who support them including family, friends, teammates and backroom staff
